Way to go, Rotterdam!
The Dutch port city has just been designated as an iCapital by the European Commission, for its ability to harness innovation to improve the lives of its citizens.
The jury highlighted Rotterdam’s resilient approach to reducing inequality, in a city facing significant social, economic and environmental challenges. This quality was indeed one of those identified by DESIGNSCAPES, when it chose Rotterdam for its City Snapshots lineup with no fewer than five case studies showcasing design-enabled innovation.
Together with the five other iCapitals — Antwerp (BE), Bristol (UK), Espoo (FI), Glasgow (UK) and Nantes (FR) — Rotterdam will receive 100,000 euros to continue developing local innovation ecosystems for the benefit of businesses and the wellbeing of its citizens.
What’s next?
During the European Research and Innovation Days in Brussels on September 25, one the six iCapitals will be awarded the prestigious title of European Capital of Innovation, and will receive one million euros to spend on innovation in the city.
Keep up the good work, Rotterdam — DESIGNSCAPES will be rooting for you!
