The Green Connection is a collection of initiatives that promote more green areas and health in the City. Various local actors have joined forces to strengthen existing projects and demonstrate their societal impacts. These initiatives form a green ribbon around Delfshaven, a former local municipality in Rotterdam, known for the activism of its citizens and experiments of democratic innovation. The ribbon creates an 8 kilometres long walking route through the Rotterdam West neighbourhood and links local care and welfare institutions to the green initiatives that are part of De Groene Connectie. Further, the Open Data Lab of Rotterdam has infrastructured it as a participatory space, by setting up and facilitating a hackathon, where the concept could be co-created and validated.
Most of the initiatives involved are already mature, demonstrating e.g. a self-organising capacity in the management of public parks. The collective dimension is gaining more and more attention and most activities go beyond citizen participation. In particular, the collaboration with health institutes shows the value of green for public health. Moreover, the solutions developed lean towards participation in larger programs such Rotterdam Resilience. One of the parks, for example, has experimented with waterbodies as new ways for flood control.
The main elements the initiative tackles is liveability: generating better services for the public Green spaces of the neighbourhood, increasing accessibility to public Green spaces and improving the overall the neighbour’s estate of health and well-being. On a different level, by connecting the different green and healthcare initiatives, it aims at strengthening the influence of these towards the municipality and acting as a bridge for more fluid conversation between local residents and the municipality.
